Of Love and Lies

On its silver screen debut in 1985, Pati ba Pintig ng Puso starred Regal’s most wanted love team of the era -- Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion. Also in the cast were Eddie Garcia, Jobelle Salvador and Dina Bonnevie. As one of her earliest flicks, it was instrumental to the Mega Star’s gradual rise to fame.

And now, the dramatic tale is back to give two of today’s hottest teen stars a wider niche in the entertainment spotlight. Fresh from her excellent portrayal of Charming in Bakekang , StarStruck 1 First Princess Yasmien Kurdi plays Jenna, and the equally lovable JC de Vera is Aldrin.

The Plot

“Pati ba Pintig ng Puso” is a story about Jenna, a young, naïve servant who falls for Aldrin, her master Don Griego’s grandson. The tale begins in the Griego mansion, where the self-exiled Aldrin returns from the States to find out why his sister Mabelle (Chynna Ortaleza) was sent to the asylum.
Don Griego (Eddie Gutierrez) rejoices, thinking his grandson returned to take over their business empire. He thus arranges Aldrin’s marriage to a business partner’s daughter, Agatha (Karel Marquez) to expand their reach.
Eager to disobey every command his manipulative grandfather imposes, Aldrin convinces the maid Jenna to elope, on the condition that it will only be on paper. Madly in love as Jenna is with him, she agrees without hesitation.
Interesting and unexpected twists will arise as the authoritative Don Griego tries to halt his only heir’s plans. Even Jenna’s life will suddenly shift from peaceful to chaotic. In this story, everyone gets their chance to realize that it is never possible to play with fire and easily get away with it.

Grace under Pressure

Taking over the course of the project is respected director Gil Tejada, who made sure he saw the movie again to have a grasp of its storyline and know the demands his actors have to meet.

“From there (the movie), I find the character of Jenna (Sharon) and Aldrin (Gabby), na in comparison to Yasmien and JC, ay bagay sa kanila talaga. Eksakto ‘yung story,” he proudly shares.

And because he wants an original and uninfluenced attack from his performers, he discouraged them from seeing the film. “Actually ang payo ko kay JC, huwag niyang panoorin ‘yun movie (kasi) baka maimpluwesiyahan (sya). (I want to) be the one to guide them. Para meron din kaming identity. Para masabing hindi sila nangopya kung anong ginawa nila,” he explains.

Both Yasmien and JC, meanwhile, admit that they are flattered for getting the lead roles, but are tense and nervous due to high expectations from them.

“Meron pong pressure, kasi Sharon Cuneta na po ‘yun. I know there will always be a comparison, pero kumukuha po ako ng help from our director (para sa) kung anong mas babagay doon sa role,” Yasmien discloses.

JC reinforces Yasmien’s claim when he says “(I’m) nervous kasi takot kaming ma-compare doon sa original na gumanap, Pero sana walang comparison.”

But in the end, everyone from the show promises the viewers an excellent tale of love that they will look forward to every weekday afternoon. “Dito, ipapakita ‘yung detalye na hindi naipakita doon sa pelikula,” Yasmien assures.

Made for Karen
Article posted May 30, 2007 by: (GMA)

After a stint in Mars Ravelo’s Darna , Karen now plays Sosima, a doting best friend to the meek Jenna, played by (Yasmien Kurdi ) in Sine Novela’s second offering, Pati ba Pintig ng Puso? . Unlike her former character Weng, who lost her memory and became an enemy to her dear friend Narda, Sosima is Jenna’s ever-loyal buddy who always defends her from the cruel treatments of her stubborn sister, Claire (Arci Muñoz).

Karen says it is a relief that she gets to show the good side of her this time. “Unlike (‘yung mga roles ko) before, may pagka-bad (lang ako dito) when it comes to pagtatanggol ko sa kanya, lalo na doon sa sister niya.”

Other than a best friend, she is also Jenna’s constant confidant, morale booster and fervent believer. “Parang masyadong (negative) ‘yung attitude ni Yasmien (Jenna) na parang, ‘katulong lang ako’, kaya ako yung nagpu-push sa kanya” she says.

Karen never expected to land a part in the drama series. “Talagang hinatak lang ako ng friend ko na executive producer. Nag-guest lang ako sa Magpakialanman , tapos noong first taping day sinabihan ako na ‘Uy, may taping kami sa Pintig ” she shares. “Tignan mo, ako lang ‘yung walang picture (sa poster)” she adds, pointing to the show poster where her character is clearly absent.

Glad and thankful that she is back in the entertainment industry, she says she is determined to show that her acting skills are still as good as before – if not better. “Love ko talaga ang pag-aartista, so masaya ako na I’m back. Siguro makikita ng mga tao na kahit isang taon akong nawala, marunong pa rin akong umarte.”

Playing Sosima also allows her to be versatile. She explains “may halong comedy, (pagiging) mataray at mabait. Halo-halo siya, (so) all in one!”

And as she has worked with Direk Gil Tejada and her most co-stars in her previous shows, Karen claims she is already comfortable with the people around her. “Masaya, todo!” she exclaims. “Naka-trabaho ko na rin halos lahat before so wala namang problema (kasi) feeling at home (na).”

Now that she is turning 23, Karen says people can expect her to be more mature, on and off camera. “’Yung Karen before, sobrang bata pa niya, sobrang taray na nakaka-intimidate. Ngayon, sana kung ano man ‘yung nasa utak ng tao dati, na in a bad way, sana isipin nila na dala lang ng kabataan ko” she explains.

This maturity, she adds, helps her deal with people better. It also gives more life to her character as she has more experiences to draw emotions from.

The New Girl on the Block
Article posted May 22, 2007 by: (GMA)

She is Karel Marquez, the irresistible new girl on the block. Her charming face will definitely draw you to her, but her character in Sine Novela’s
Pati ba Pintig ng Puso will repel you.

Karel plays Agatha, Aldrin’s (JC de Vera) fiancée, who will do anything for money. Although it was not part of her plans to be committed to Aldrin, she agreed to their arranged marriage because she fears losing her wealth. “I can’t live without money so ginawa nila, tinanggal nila lahat ng pera ko sa bank. Hanggang sa pumayag ako, and eventually, I did everything para maging kami ni Aldrin at para magka-pera pa rin ako.”

Formerly portrayed by the veteran actress Dina Bonnevie, Karel says the role is both an honor and also quite daunting. “Sobrang nakakakaba kasi it’s Dina Bonnevie, pero at the same time, parang ‘Wow! Gagawin ko ‘yung role niya?’”

Although Karel is used to playing antagonists, she admits that she has always wanted to be the protagonist. “Actually I always dreamed of playing bida kasi in real life hindi naman ako mataray” she explains.

The young actress also asserts that Agatha’s personality is far from the real her. “Very patient ako, and this girl is very impatient. I’m not mukhang pera at saka I always smile and siya naman ay palaging mainit ang ulo. Over fashionable din siya, ako naman simple lang” she notes.

She quickly rebounds, though. “(Pero) I’m so happy (doing this) because this is my first major role in soap. I’m loving my job right now na puro kontrabida siguro (kasi) bagay (sa’kin) kaya kinukuha pa rin nila ako. Saka as an actress, I’m not naman (a) veteran so na-cha-challenge pa rin ako.”

It is Karel’s first time to work with for the Kapuso network, but claims to be having a good time and enjoying the experience. “So far so good. Magka-vibes kaming lahat ng cast. Sobrang ang bait (ng) lahat.”

Up to the Challenge

JC de Vera grandly returns to the small screen and livens up our afternoons as the handsome Aldrin in Sine Novela’s second offering, Pati Ba Pintig ng Puso . First portrayed by the heartthrob Gabby Concepcion in a film of the same title, the pressure and expectations on JC are definitely high. Just how did he prepare for such a demanding role?

“Preparations? Wala eh, kasi hindi rin pinapanood sa’kin ‘yung movie. Changes meron, nagpaitim ako ng buhok, pero major preparations, wala,” he says.

And although JC was not able to view the film, he makes sure he acts at par with his fellow stars and according to the standards set by his acting coaches and director. It is also a bonus to be working in a drama show, as it is exactly the genre he likes doing best.

“Passion ko talaga mag-drama eh. Kapag nalaman ko na dito sa eksena, iiyak ako, mas na-e-excite ako” he stresses.

Making Aldrin his own, he claims, is what the people have to watch out for. He adds “Iyon ang dapat nilang abangan. Naniniwala naman ako na hindi siya maco-compare kasi very different nga ‘yung attack ko dito, dahil sa tulong ng director namin…(na) sobrang bantay sa bawat unit ng pag-arte ko.”

Mr. Congeniality

In his years in the industry, JC has been paired with several young ladies for different shows. He has worked with Valerie Concepcion , Julie Ann Lee, StarStruck’s Cristine Reyes , LJ Reyes , Ryza Cenon and now, Yasmien Kurdi .

And how is it working with Yasmien?

“Masaya” he replies, chuckling. “Nakakatuwa, kasi siya lang ‘yung katulong na maganda,” he says in jest.

JC asserts, however, that he is cool with having different partners on screen. “Para sa ’kin kasi, ayoko sanang umangat ako na iisa lang ‘yung love team ko. Gusto ko sana umangat ako na iba-iba para at least hindi ako ma-distinguish na ‘iyan si JC kapartner ni (ganito)’. Gusto ko, ‘Uy si JC, ‘yung sa Pati ba Pintig ng Puso ’. Gusto ko ganoon.”

He notes that his versatility as an actor could be highlighted if he has different on screen love interests. “‘Pag nag-stick ka sa isang partner, may tendency talaga na hindi ka mag-progress or hindi ka mag-improve sa acting. Unlike kapag iba-iba ‘yung partners mo, iba-iba rin ‘yung pag-attack mo sa eksena,” he explains.

Jiving with his leading ladies’ moods and attitudes does not even seem to be a problem for him. “It’s a must. Kailangan talaga, Kahit first time ninyo pa lang mag-meet, kailangan makipag-usap ka na. Kailangan mag-open ka kahit one secret man lang para gumaan loob niya sa ’yo” he says. “Kailangan mo ring maging mabait, kailangang maging approachable ka.”

In fact, JC applies the same rationale when it comes to dealing with other members of the cast in his new show. That is why “lahat kami open sa isa’t isa so walang dull moment.”
